We have an agenda. Is it the same as yours?
Why does a publishing company like Matthias Media need to ask for donations? It’s one of the big questions we get asked when we seek financial support for the work we do. Let me have a crack at answering it.
There are publishing companies and then there are publishing ministries.
Publishing companies exist to make a profit by only publishing books that will sell in significant numbers (that’s the plan, anyway) that will then cover their publishing costs and add to their profit. Publishing companies often have specialities. They can specialise in fiction, biography, history, religion, even Christianity. But, in the end, the driving force behind their publishing decision is: “Will this sell?”
Publishing ministries, on the other hand, publish resources for their particular missional purpose. In a broad sense, we could be talking about anything from encouraging people to collect stamps to an extreme adherence to a conspiracy theory. The key difference is that they have an agenda.
Matthias Media is a publishing ministry and we have an agenda: we publish resources that have a multiplying impact on the growth of God’s kingdom, resources for God’s people to use in his service to make and grow disciples. Does this purpose sound like one you would encourage?
These titles are often not written by ‘well-known’ authors. They require careful and extensive editing, to ensure they are thoroughly biblical and high quality, in order to be as useful as possible to disciple-makers—and they may not sell particularly well in the usual bookshops. They are aimed at growing the maturity of the reader as well as the people they relate to in discipleship, and they are resources we want to keep in print and available, because even if they only reach a smallish number of people each year with the life-changing gospel of Christ, we want to continue reaching those people!
So, our publishing ministry needs your help. We are seeking to raise $100,000 before the end of June to help us continue to develop resources that punch above their weight with gospel impact. Can you help us produce more resources that go beyond just making people feel good but that grow Jesus’ disciples?
