In a sea of busyness and distractions, prayer so often falls off the agenda. Or maybe it was barely on the agenda to begin with. Even with the best of intentions, sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin. Wherever you’re at, join Stephen Shead as he takes you through 4 weeks of daily reflections to get you on track with a pattern of prayerful living. With each short reflection, you’ll be encouraged to meditate on truths that fuel joyful prayer. Through the weeks, you will build up your own habit of coming before your heavenly Father each day to delight in and depend on him. Includes four optional group studies.
After purchasing Growing in Prayer, you can also download a PDF of the group studies.
Stephen Shead studied at Moore Theological College and has a PhD in Biblical Hebrew from the University of Sydney. He was a missionary in Chile for ten years, teaching at the Anglican Church’s Centre for Pastoral Studies in Santiago. He now serves as the senior minister at St Barnabas’ Anglican Church in Fairfield and Bossley Park, Sydney.
I have worked through this book twice! This time round I ordered 200 copies and sold them all to church members to help people kickstart their prayer habits. Many of our Growth Groups also used the studies in the back.
Stephen writes in the way he speaks (and is) - with great love and care to help people live the Christian life. The daily reflections are just the right length, and keep things simple - building up over 28 days. Although "not another book on prayer", over 28 days Stephen manages to strike many of the notes that a longer book would want to tackle.
I commend this book to anyone who wants to establish a good habit of daily prayer.
The study approaches prayer by addressing my relationship with God, my Heavenly Father'. The author doesn't beat you about the head and the need for more prayer rather he reminded me of the unique relationship I have as a child of God.
I can thoroughly recommend this little study. Each day the study is only 2-3 short pages in length and don't hurry through it, take your time with each page it will be well worth it. Growing in Prayer is a great little study I thoroughly recommend it.
Having grown in my own prayer life through ‘Growing in prayer’, I couldn’t wait to use it across my church. I preached the series in church. 100 people loved using the personal devotions. Our 10 Growth groups encouraged one another through the bible studies at the back of the book. This may be the most effective and encouraging series we have done in the last 15 years. Make the most of this resource in your church.
One of our GG leaders said: I think it was a great choice, especially in this time of isolation, to encourage us to draw closer to our Father. I think Stephen Shad’s approach both in the meditations and studies was easy to read, understand and apply.
It would be great to have more resources which are this accessible, easy to use and practical.
