Discover is a 5-week, ultra-flexible evangelistic course that has been developed and tested over many years in a variety of contexts. Visit the Discover site to find out more and access the free videos. There is also a free downloadable set of support files, as well as a handbook for leaders, but the linchpin for attendees is this book that they read at home to continue engaging with the gospel message outside the meeting times.
From the back of the book:
What do you think life is all about? Why are you here? What happens when you die?
2000 years ago, an uneducated carpenter from an insignificant small town in the Middle East gave answers to those questions. His name was Jesus. What he said was nothing short of revolutionary; and if what he said is true, it will have a massive impact on your life today … and for eternity.
In Discover, we spend 5 sessions investigating the claims that Jesus made, and what they mean for you. During this time, you will listen to some talks and think through and reflect on what you’ve heard in your own time.
We are excited to have you join us! We believe that learning about Jesus is the most life-changing thing you will ever do.
Discover uses the Two Ways to Live gospel framework. It's best delivered informed by the experience and tips available in the Discover Leader’s Handbook.
Dave Jensen has worked as a pastor at churches in Sydney, Belfast, and the Central Coast of New South Wales. He is now the Assistant Director of Evangelism and New Churches within the Sydney Anglican Diocese. He has been privileged to focus on evangelism for over a decade in churches, and now trains and equips other pastors and Christians in thinking through the effective proclamation of the gospel to non-Christians. He is the author of the ‘What is a Christian?’ evangelistic tract and can be heard on the ‘Fire up!’ podcast. He is married to Sammy and together they have four sons.
We are half-way through our first "Discover" course. I love Dave's gospel passion, but there are a few things that make me feel that this course is not a good fit for our group:
- Dave speaks very fast on the videos, which is hard for those whose English is not fluent. (The videos are also quite long.)
- I would love the Bible to be more front and centre: there seem to be more quotes from other books/resources than from the Bible, and it's hard to distinguish the Bible passages from the rest of the quotes, as they are all in the same font and layout. (I am also keen to get participants to look up the passage in an actual physical Bible.)
- Most significantly, it seems that the"Option me" format is targetting post-modern Anglo Aussies - and the people we are doing Discover with are all from non-Anglo backgrounds (Chinese, Indian, Iranian, etc). For most of these, "Option me" doesn't seem to fit, as they are unlikely to say that their highest priority is their own authentic self and self-fulfilment, but rather thing like upholding the honour of their family, obeying other religious teachers, being a good person, pleasing the ancestors, being respected, etc.
I would be happy to hear others' feedback and also to talk further about this feedback if that would be helpful.
