“For the past ten years, I’ve been trying to think about what it means to have anxiety and to be Christian. And being a Christian wrestling with mental health in the modern world can be confusing, to say the least.
What I found I wanted in the depths of anxiety was a way to see light again.
I found it in the psalms—specifically, one of the simplest and shortest of the psalms. I found answers that helped move me away from the edges of anxiety towards the comfort of the Lord.”
In this brief book, Guan Un turns away from superficial answers and quick fixes, looking instead to Psalm 131. He offers Christians dealing with anxiety disorders—and those who love these fellow believers—biblical truths to cling to when thoughts, feelings and life seem overwhelming.
Guan lives in Sydney’s inner west with Mary, two kids and a red dog. He studied at Moore College in order to write books, which confused just about everybody. Now, he’s a programmer and a writer of fiction and books like this one, and happily spends a lot of time behind a keyboard. He gets excited about a well-told story, a well-turned sentence, and a well-baked custard tart.
This is the perfect little/short/easy/biblical/gospel-centred book to put in the hands of a believer suffering from anxiety. Of whom there are many!
I’ve read many Christian books on anxiety and although I have found all of them useful, there are few that I would quickly recommend to others who are suffering this distressing ailment - mostly because they are long and detailed. This little book is different. It is a short easy read. I managed it in one session but still took away a deeper understanding of God and some tools to manage anxiety.
The author Guan Un suffers from an anxiety disorder and has spent the last 10 years trying to think about what it means to have anxiety and be a Christian. He makes a helpful analogy that having an anxiety disorder is a bit like having a broken gearbox which keeps the motor running at dangerously high revs. One thing that helps Guan to see light and feel comfort whilst dealing with anxiety is the Psalms, especially Psalm 131.
Psalm 131 was already a favourite of mine and one that I have explored with others suffering from depression and anxiety. I love it even more now.
God has answered my cry for help with this book. I find the prayer at the beginning most helpful. Things have been very stressful lately and I often found myself “stuck” with unhelpful thoughts. This simple and easy-to-memorise prayer has helped me move from the head knowledge of “God is good” onto accepting God is bigger than my worries , so I can rest and trust in Him. The explanations are easy to follow and the part about looking from self to others is a great reminder. Thank you Guan and Matthias Media, may this book be a blessing to many other anxious believes.
