Description
"Two devastating words left me feeling hopeless and lost. Tumour and incurable."
So begins David McDonald's desperate search for hope through the unflinching gaze of his terminal cancer diagnosis. His dreams shattered, his family distraught, his body wracked by chemotherapy and his faith severely tested, this Christian pastor went back to the Bible to find out for certain: Is God there? Does he care? When there is no cure, does God still offer hope?
This third edition includes a carer's perspective by Fiona McDonald, David's wife.

Because we’re all cancer sufferers or potential cancer sufferers, we all need this book for our present or our future. Dave doesn’t pull his punches about his illness; yet he does point to hope. Because it’s written from personal experience, not an ivory tower, it’s always real and never trite. This book will make you smile, might make you cry, and may just change your life. Make sure you read it.
—Carl Laferton, Senior Editor, The Good Book CompanyThis book deals with issues close to my heart, since my mother died of cancer earlier this year. My only complaint is that it was not published a year earlier—it would have been the perfect book for her to read. Hope Beyond Cure is a moving and deeply encouraging combination of truth, mature reflection and hope, communicated by someone who has known the pit of despair. Read this book and give it away. Its contents should be shared with every person facing death—which, in the end, includes us all.
—Constantine R Campbell, Associate Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, ChicagoAlthough David is a theologian and pastor, he writes as a fellow human haemorrhaging emotional and physical pain. I’ve seen firsthand how inoperable cancer stole his future and threatened his hope. If you are doing it tough with illness or hardship, or you just have questions and doubts regarding Jesus, this book is for you. It will not give you pithy, cold and callous answers, but an insightful personal reflection toward real hope beyond cure.
—Richard Chin, National Director, Australian Fellowship of Evangelical StudentsNo matter what you believe in, when struck down in your prime by a terminal illness, the reality of our human mortality can hit like a tsunami. Hope Beyond Cure is a remarkable story of courage, resilience, belief and the power of faith. David McDonald’s story will not only inspire you to rise up against your own affliction and never give up, but more importantly it will challenge you to look beyond the here and now for strength, healing and peace.
—Rob Clarke, Business consultant and former Chief Operating Officer at Australian Rugby UnionI admire the honesty with which David talks about his journey with terminal cancer. We get not only insight into his tears and fears but the reactions of those around him as well. He also talks honestly about how his cancer challenged his faith—with 1500 students praying for you, it can be hard to grasp why you are not immediately cured! Faith in a miracle can lead to irrational avoidance of reality and pain for the family—but David never falls into that trap. This is a warm and honest story of hope, love and faith on a journey filled with uncertainties.
—Prof. Bruce Robinson, Professor of Medicine and cancer researcher, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

As a registered nurse working in oncology, the sad fact that a lot of our patients come to the realisation that their disease has progressed and treatment is no longer helpful.
Facing limited time tends to focus the mind on the big questions of life, death and meaning.I've given this book out, selectively, to patients, whom I've come to know are struggling with coming to terms of end of life
I openly disclose that I'm a Christian and that although this book is faith based it is not just for people of faith. I also inform that I've read the book and that I found it an insightful, honest and thoughtfully written book by someone who has walked in their shoes.
I offer it as a gift, for them to accept or decline. It has always been gratefully accepted.
I'm not always in a position to know what happens afterwards but I have received some feedback from patients or surviving family members who report a comfort and reassurance in having read the book...one even reading it twice 😌

RNPPastor S.D.This is a great book. Really speaks to the heart and to the real issues of facing a battle with cancer that cant be won, yet showing the true hope of the gospel. Would be very suitable for those who have some interest in christian things but are not completely sure about where they stand with God. Great for Christian doctors, pastors, anyone like that, to give out when they re asked the hard questions about hope when there seems to be no hope.
Very thankful to have found this book. Highly recommend.CCameronWe ordered 50 copies of Hope Beyond Cure to tie in with the unveiling of a “HOPE” sign in one of our local parks to lift spirits in our community, which is impacted by the drought. In the lead up to the main event, people were encouraged to share what they were hoping for on Facebook and on the day they placed a padlock on the sign with their hopes engraved on it. This was not a church event but being a country town there was opportunity for me (on behalf of the churches) to say a few words and point to the sure and certain hope we have in Jesus. I was able to briefly share of the hope beyond rain, the hope beyond health, the hope beyond happiness. We had the 50 copies of the book there and gave away about 30 that night. A few copies went to a couple of the other churches and the balance was taken by our church members over the next few weeks with instructions to read and then pass on. All the books have gone.
I was speaking to one of our 90 year old ladies this week who said that she had nearly finished Hope Beyond Cure and that it was a wonderful book. She knew who she was going to be passing it to as soon as she had finished it, but said she would need to get it back or get another copy.
Some five years back we gave copies to a few people in the church who were undergoing treatment for cancer, but it is a great book for anybody to read. After suggesting to our Elders that we should purchase 20 or so to give away they said, “more!”. I’m glad we ordered 50!

Dave McDonald does battle with cancer. He shows hope not to be a cure for cancer but God's cure for sin, which gives us a true and un perishable hope for now and the future. I read this book in record time, as I have known Dave for many years and like Dave this book is gutsy and real.
