Proverbs is a favourite book of the Old Testament for many Christians. It's so full of practical advice on how to live wisely and well in God's world.
But is Proverbs more than just a large collection of pithy sayings? What is the overall message of the book of Proverbs? And how does understanding Proverbs as a whole help us understand and apply each of the individual sayings?
In this first of two volumes of studies, Joshua Ng answers these questions by giving us an overview of the book of Proverbs, especially in the light of its first nine chapters. In the process, we learn much about the wise and foolish life, about what it means to 'fear' God, and about how the teaching of Proverbs relates to Jesus and the teaching of the whole Bible.
Ideal for small groups or individuals.
If you wish to share copies of the study with others, or plan to read out the questions or explanatory text to a group, consider a group licence. A group licence allows for up to 15 copies of a PDF to be shared within one growth group, making it quick and easy to organise. Otherwise, adjust the quantity you're buying to match the number of people participating. Volume discounts still apply to digital files, and these discounts will be automatically applied at checkout.

Halfway between a sermon and a set of study questions, these studies, written by gifted Bible teachers, provide excellent biblical input and direction while leaving you to do much of the exploration.
These studies were insightful but were hard work and had a high level of assumed knowledge. The author assumed familiarity with the Scriptures broadly, Biblical theology ('we are used to thinking of...'), and at least a passing familiarity with Proverbs (study 1 question 1 'share one or two of your favourite proverbs from Proverbs). The 'implications' questions had good variety, but often didn't take the chance to apply the particular proverbs focussed on as case studies along the way. We came away with an understanding of how to approach Proverbs, and I particularly appreciated the demonstration of how Jesus is the fulfilment of this book, and how the New Testament applies Proverbs. In short: best suited for mature Christians with a grasp of the Bible broadly, hard work but usually worth the effort.
Our group of women have finished studying this series and we loved it!
We commented on the importance of reading Proverbs in the context of God's plan for His people, the importance of the fear of the Lord and the many references to Proverbs in the NT.
It was refreshing to not just tackle each saying of wisdom and we have a Summer challenge (when we don't meet each week) of grappling with the key concepts, memorising and using Proverbs in our conversations and sharing how we have applied our developing wisdom and discernment in our lives.
Thanks to Joshua Ng and the team!
